This is the reality for smallholder farmers around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. For years, these families struggled to earn a fair income from their coffee crops. Without sustainable market access, many were forced to meet basic needs by entering the forest for firewood, wild food, or grazing land, inadvertently threatening the very habitat that sustained the wildlife around them.
That’s where Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) stepped in with an innovative idea: what if coffee could do more than just generate income? What if it could protect a species and support a community at the same time?
And just like that, Gorilla Conservation Coffee was born, a social enterprise with heart.

CTPH paid farmers premium prices, above local market value, helping stabilize incomes for families who had long endured market volatility. Monitor
They brought training and resources directly to farmers, teaching organic farming and climate-smart practices.
And, critically, they brought the market closer to the farmers, removing barriers that often disenfranchise small producers.
For farmers such as John Ninkunda and George Katemba, this wasn’t just economics, it was transformation. With fair pay and predictable sales, they could send their children to school, buy food that they didn’t grow, and invest in their households. With more secure earnings, they no longer had to rely on the forest for resources, reducing human-wildlife conflict and protecting vulnerable ecosystems.
