The Cup That Costs Them Everything: A Farmer’s Fight to Keep Growing
We usually think of coffee as comforting. It’s the thing that helps us get going, unwind, or share a moment with someone we love. But for many of the people who grow the beans that fill your favorite mug… coffee can also break hearts.
I recently read an article that’s stuck with me ever since: “The Pain of Uganda’s Coffee Farmers as Prices Plunge” (The East African). It’s a heartbreaking read.
After years of hope and progress, global prices have dropped, and with it, the livelihood of countless smallholder farmers across Uganda. These are people who’ve poured their lives into growing high-quality beans. People who don’t have the luxury of just "waiting for the market to bounce back."
And yet, they’re still showing up. Still planting. Still harvesting. Still believing.
What We Don’t Always See in Our Morning Mug
Most coffee drinkers don’t see the backstory in their cup. We think about flavor, maybe even origin, but rarely about what the farmer was going through that year.
That’s not a guilt trip. It’s just how the system has worked for a long time: producers at the bottom, prices at the mercy of volatile markets, and consumers, well, disconnected.
At Win Win Coffee, we’re trying to change that.
Because coffee should be more than delicious. It should be fair. It should be personal. And it should be shared.
From Loss to Legacy: A Farmer’s Story
One of our farming partners in Ethiopia, we’ll call her Ayele, once told us, “Coffee is my history. My father grew it. My grandfather grew it. I grow it because it’s part of who we are.”
But she also told us how hard it is when prices crash. When her beans don’t sell for what they’re worth. When the market says, “Not enough,” after a year of pouring every ounce of herself into the soil.
That’s why we make it our mission to pay above-market rates and maintain long-term relationships with farmers. Because these aren’t just supply chains. These are people. With stories, with families, with hope.
What You Can Do (That’s Surprisingly Simple)
Now here’s the good news: you don’t have to be an expert in global economics to make a difference.
You just need to drink intentionally.
Here’s how to make your cup matter more:
Buy from roasters who care about direct trade. (Hey there 👋 that’s us!)
We work directly with farmers and cooperatives to ensure they’re paid fairly, regardless of what the global commodity price says.Get curious about your coffee’s origin.
Ask where it came from. Look for names, regions, and stories. When you know the story behind your brew, it tastes even better. (Trust me on this one.)Make coffee a ritual, not just a routine.
Light a candle. Play music. Brew slowly. Pause. Honor the hands that made it possible.
A Little Bit of Joy: Coffee Rituals That Connect Us
Let me tell you about one of our customers, Grace in North Carolina. Every Sunday, she grinds a few tablespoons of our Velvet Gold blend and brews it with her vintage Chemex. She plays old jazz records while the water drips through the filter, and her kitchen fills with the smell of citrus and cocoa.
She says it’s the only time all week she truly slows down.
Or Josh from Arizona, who brews Boldly Balanced in his camper van before hiking the desert trails with his golden retriever. For him, it’s “part fuel, part therapy.”
These moments are why we do what we do. Because when you connect to your coffee, not just the taste, but the people behind it, you become part of something bigger.
Your Cup Can Create Change
Yes, coffee prices are dropping for farmers in Uganda and beyond. Yes, that’s devastating. But here’s the thing:
You have more power than you think.
Every time you choose a company that pays fair prices, tells the farmer’s story, and values quality over quantity, you’re choosing connection over convenience. And those choices add up.
You’re not just sipping coffee.
You’re helping someone like Ayele keep her farm going.
You’re giving dignity where the market has failed.
You’re part of a win-win.
